Mirror group role conflict

An asynchronous mirror group holds the same role (Primary or Secondary) on both this (local) storage array and the remote storage array. The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the recovery steps.

Important:
  • This problem typically occurs when a role change operation was attempted while there was a connection problem between this storage array and the remote storage array. As a result, the role of the asynchronous mirror group was forced to Primary or Secondary on only one side of the mirror group. When the connection was reestablished between the two storage arrays, the forced promotion resulted in both sides of the mirror group holding the same role.

  • If the dual role conflict is the Primary role, both sides of the asynchronous mirror group are capable of receiving writes. If both sides have new writes, demoting one side of the mirror group to the Secondary role will result in data loss because the writes will be discarded as the mirror group is resynchronized.

  • If the dual role conflict is the Secondary role, no new writes will occur and promoting one side of the mirror group to the Primary role will not result in data loss.

  • This problem will be reported on both this storage array and the remote storage array; however, the storage array used to complete the recovery steps will depend on which side of the mirror group will be promoted to Primary or demoted to Secondary.

Recovery Steps

  1. Refer to the Details area to identify the affected asynchronous mirror group and the dual role conflict.

    • If the dual role conflict is the Primary role, go to step 2.

    • If the dual role conflict is the Secondary role, go to step 3.

  2. Perform the following steps to demote one side of the asynchronous mirror group to the Secondary role:

    1. Identify which side (this storage array or the remote storage array) of the mirror group to demote.

    2. Navigate to the Array Management Window (AMW) for the side of the mirror group to be demoted.

    3. On the Storage and Copy Services tab in the AMW, highlight the affected mirror group.

    4. Select the Copy Services > Mirroring > Asynchronous Mirroring > Mirror Group > Change > Role to Secondary menu option.

    5. Follow the instructions in the dialog, and type "yes" to confirm the operation.

    6. Go to step 4.

  3. Perform the following steps to promote one side of the asynchronous mirror group to the Primary role:

    1. Identify which side (this storage array or the remote storage array) of the mirror group to promote.

    2. Navigate to the Array Management Window (AMW) for the side of the mirror group to be promoted.

    3. On the Storage and Copy Services tab in the AMW, highlight the affected mirror group.

    4. Select the Copy Services > Mirroring > Asynchronous Mirroring > Mirror Group > Change > Role to Primary menu option.

    5. Follow the instructions in the dialog, and type "yes" to confirm the operation.

    6. Go to step 4.

  4. Click the Recheck button to rerun the Recovery Guru. The failure should no longer appear in the Summary area. If the failure appears again, contact your Technical Support Representative.
