Premium feature - out of compliance

A premium feature is Out of Compliance.

This problem can occur in the following scenarios:

The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the recovery steps.

Important:
  • This problem can occur if you disable a feature pack key. Disabling a feature pack key can result in multiple individual features transitioning to an Out of Compliance state since you may have globally lowered the limits supported by the storage array. If there is a "Feature Pack - Out of Compliance" problem in the Summary Area, complete those recovery steps first. If this problem still appears after you complete the recovery steps for the "Feature Pack - Out of Compliance" problem, then proceed with the recovery steps below.

  • Scenario 1 typically happens because you:

    • Disabled the premium feature while feature objects are still present (i.e. the storage array allows 0 objects since the feature is disabled, and you currently have more than 0)

    • Disabled a mirroring premium feature while the feature is still activated

    • Enabled or disabled a feature pack resulting in the storage array allowing less feature objects than are currently present on the storage array

  • Scenario 2 happens because the controllers were not previously attached to drives, so the controllers 'adopt' the configuration database of the first drive they encounter. When drives are adopted by the controllers, the configuration database contained on the drives (which includes all of the information about the previous storage array, including the enabled/disabled information of features) is used by the controllers. Therefore, the information in the configuration database shows that the feature is enabled, but the feature is either disabled on this storage array or not supported by the controllers. If the controllers had been previously attached to drives and then another set of drives are added, then the new drives would be 'imported' (overwriting the configuration database) rather than 'adopted' since the controller is using the configuration database of the existing drives.

  • For Scenario 1, you can fix this problem in two ways:

    • You can re-enable the premium feature key

    • You can remove the feature objects until you are below the limit allowed

    • If a mirroring feature is still activated, you can deactivate the feature

  • For Scenario 2, you can fix this problem in two ways:

    • You can enable the premium feature if it is supported by this storage array

    • You can remove the feature objects and then disable the premium feature

  • While this feature is in an Out of Compliance state, you will NOT be able to:

    • Create new configuration objects (automatically or manually) - such as volumes, snapshots, mirror relationships, volume copy pairs, and storage partitions

    • Assign hot spares

    • Change the segment size of a volume

    • Change the RAID level of a volume group

    • Expand the capacity of a volume group or volume

Recovery Steps

Scenario 1
  1. Identify the premium feature that is Out of Compliance in the Recovery Guru Details area.

  2. If... Then...
"Mirroring activated" is listed in the Details area You have no mirroring objects on the storage array, but the mirroring feature must be deactivated. Perform the following steps:
    1. From the Array Management Window, select the Copy Services > Mirroring > Deactivate menu option.

    2. Select the mirroring feature (identified in step 1) that should be deactivated.

    3. Click Yes.

    4. Go to step 6.

"Mirroring activated is NOT listed in the Details area Go to step 3.
  3. If... Then...
You want to resolve this problem by enabling the premium feature key Go to step 4.
You want to resolve this problem by removing the feature objects until you are below the limit allowed Reduce the number of feature objects to equal to or less than the number of objects allowed. The maximum number of objects allowed is listed in the Details area.
Note: For most feature objects, using the Delete option will reduce the number of feature objects. For some feature objects, such as mirrored pairs, using the Remove option will reduce the number of feature objects. If you are removing mirroring objects, be sure to deactivate the mirroring feature once all objects have been removed using the Copy Services > Mirroring > Deactivate menu option.
  4. Select the Storage Array > Premium Features menu option in the Array Management Window.

    If... Then...
The premium feature appears in this dialog (regardless of status) A feature key file is needed to enable the feature.
    • If the feature has already been enabled at any time for this storage array AND you have the feature key file, go to step 5.

    • If the feature has not been enabled for this storage array OR the feature has been enabled, but you do not have the feature key file, perform the following steps:
      1. Retrieve the feature key identifier from the Premium Features and feature pack Information dialog.

      2. Contact your Technical Support Representative to request a feature key file.

      3. Go to step 5.

The feature does NOT appear in this dialog Your storage array does not support the premium feature.

It is possible that you can upgrade to a feature pack that will allow support for the premium feature. You can contact your Technical Support Representative to see if your storage array can be upgraded to a different feature pack, or you can repeat step 2 to remove the extra feature objects now.

  5. Click the Use Key File button to use the feature key file and enable the premium feature.

  6. Click the Recheck button to rerun the Recovery Guru. The failure should no longer appear in the Summary area. If the failure appears again, contact your Technical Support Representative.

Scenario 2
  1. Identify the premium feature that is Out of Compliance in the Recovery Guru Details area.

  2. If... Then...
You want to enable the feature Go to step 3.
You want to disable the feature Go to step 5.
  3. Select the Storage Array > Premium Features menu option in the Array Management Window.

    If... Then...
The premium feature appears in this dialog (regardless of status) A feature key file is needed to enable the feature.
    • If the feature has already been enabled at any time for this storage array AND you have the feature key file, go to step 4.

      3. Go to step 4.

The feature does NOT appear in this dialog Your storage array does not support the premium feature.

It is possible that you can upgrade to a feature pack that will allow support for the premium feature. You can contact your Technical Support Representative to see if your storage array can be upgraded to a different feature pack, or you can go to step 5 to remove the extra feature objects now.

  4. Click the Use Key File button to use the feature key file and enable the premium feature, and then go to step 7.

  5. Refer to the Details area to see how many feature objects are used and how many are allowed.
    If... Then...
There are currently objects that need to be removed before disabling the feature Remove all of the feature objects, then go to step 6.
There are no objects that need to be removed Go to step 6.
  6. Disable the premium feature.
    1. Select the Storage Array > Premium Features menu option in the Array Management Window.

    2. Select the premium feature from the list.

    3. Click the Disable button.

  7. Click the Recheck button to rerun the Recovery Guru. The failure should no longer appear in the Summary area. If the failure appears again, contact your Technical Support Representative.
