Volume copy operation failed

A volume copy operation has failed. This problem occurs when the amount of data written to the source volume during an online volume copy exceeds the amount of capacity in the copy operation's reserved capacity, or when there is a problem with either the source or target volume.

Recovery Steps

  1. Do you want to retry this copy operation?

    • If yes, go to step 2.

    • If no, go to step 18.

  2. Check the volume copy type field in the Details area?

    • If the volume copy type is Online, go to step 3.

    • If the volume copy type is Offline, go to step 9.

  3. Are any Snapshot Image Purged problems also being reported in the Problems area?

    • If yes, go to step 4.

    • If no, go to step 9.

  4. Open the Snapshot Image Purged problem and check the associated base volume field in the Details area.

    • If the base volume shown in the Details area is the same as the source volume in the Details area of this problem, go to step 5.

    • If the base volume shown in the Details area is not the source volume in the Details area of this problem, go to step 9.

  5. Check the associated with volume copy field in the Details area of the Snapshot Image Purged problem.

    • If the purged snapshot is associated with a volume copy, go to step 6.

    • If the snapshot is not associated with a volume copy operation (that is, it is a standard snapshot image), go to step 9.

  6. The volume copy failed because the amount of data written to the volume copy's source volume exceeded the amount of capacity reserved for the online volume copy operation. This problem can be resolved by retrying the operation during a period where less data will be written to the source volume, retrying the operation with a higher copy priority, or retrying the operation with more reserved capacity.

    • If you want to retry the operation during a period where less data will be written to the source volume, wait until the source volume is less active and then go to step 20.

    • If you want to retry the operation with a higher copy priority, go to step 7.

    • If you want to retry the operation with with more reserved capacity, go to step 8.

  7. Retry the operation with a higher copy priority, and then go to step 21.

    1. Go to Home.

    2. Select the Show operations in progress link.

    3. Find the applicable volume copy operation in the table.

    4. Select Re-Copy.

    5. Increase the copy priority in the Re-Copy dialog to decrease the amount of time required to complete the volume copy operation, and then re-copy the volume.

    6. Go to step 21.

  8. Cancel the current copy operation, and re-copy the volume with more reserved capacity. Then, go to step 21.

    1. Select the Save icon in the Recovery Guru to save the remaining steps to a file. These steps will no longer be accessible after you complete sub-step e.

    2. Go to Home.

    3. Select the Show operations in progress link.

    4. Find the applicable volume copy operation in the table.

    5. Select Remove.

    6. Go to Storage > Volumes.

    7. Highlight the source volume shown in the Details area and select Copy Volume under Copy Services.

    8. Increase the reserved capacity in the Copy Volume dialog to a capacity that will accommodate the amount of data that will be written to the volume during the volume copy operation, and then re-copy the volume.

    9. Go to step 21.

  9. Are any additional problems being reported in the Problems area associated with either the source or target volume shown in the Details area?

    • If yes, fix the reported problems, and then go to step 10.

    • If no, go to step 10.

  10. Check to see if the source volume is a snapshot volume.

    1. Go to Storage > Snapshots. Then, select the Snapshot Volumes tab.

    2. Search for the source volume in the table using the Name column. If the volume is listed in the table it is a snapshot volume, otherwise it is not.

Is the source volume a snapshot volume?

    • If yes, go to step 11.

    • If no, go to step 13.

  11. Does the Status column state that the volume is disabled?

    • If yes, go to step 12.

    • If no, go to step 13.

  12. Re-create the snapshot volume by highlighting the source volume in the table and selecting Re-create under Uncommon Tasks. Then, go to step 20.

  13. Check the current owner of both the source and target volumes.

    1. Go to Storage > Volumes.

    2. Highlight the source volume in the table and select View/Edit Settings.

    3. Select the Advanced tab.

    4. Locate the Current owner field in the Controller ownership section.

    5. Repeat above steps for the target volume as well.

Are the source and target volumes owned by the same controller?

    • If yes, go to step 14.

    • If no, go to step 19.

  14. Check to see if the source and target volume are in an asynchronous mirrored pair.

    1. Go to Storage > Synchronous Mirroring. Then, select the Mirrored Pairs tab.

    2. Search for the source volume in the table using the Mirrored Pairs (Primary, Secondary) column. If the volume is listed in the table it is a member of an asynchronous mirrored pair, otherwise it is not.

Is the source and/or target volume in a mirrored pair?

    • If yes, go to step 16.

    • If no, go to step 15.

  15. Check to see if the source and target volume are in a synchronous mirrored pair.

    1. Go to Storage > Synchronous Mirroring.

    2. Search for the source volume in the table using the Mirrored Pairs (Primary, Secondary) column. If the volume is listed in the table it is a member of a synchronous mirrored pair, otherwise it is not.

Is the source and/or target volume in a mirrored pair?

    • If yes, go to step 16.

    • If no, go to step 20.

  16. Check the Local Role column to determine the volume role in the mirrored pair.

    • If the volume is the secondary volume, go to step 17.

    • If the volume is the primary volume, go to step 20.

  17. The source or target volume's mirrored pair has undergone a role reversal operation since the volume copy operation was started. In order to complete the volume copy operation, you must correct the condition that caused the role reversal and promote the volume back to a primary role by highlighting the volume in the table and selecting Change Role under More. If the volume cannot be promoted back to the primary role, the volume copy operation cannot be completed on this storage array.

    • If the volume has been successfully promoted back to the primary role, go to step 20.

    • If you are unable to promote the volume back to the primary role, go to step 18.

  18. Cancel the volume copy operation, and then go to step 21.

    1. Go to Home.

    2. Select the Show operations in progress link.

    3. Find the applicable volume copy operation in the table.

    4. Select Remove to cancel the volume copy operation.

    5. Go to step 21.

  19. Change the current owner of either the source or the target volume to ensure that both volumes are owned by the same controller.

    1. Select Change ownership under More.

    2. Change the preferred owner of either the source or target volume. This will change the current owner as well.

  20. Restart the volume copy operation.

    1. Go to Home.

    2. Select the Show operations in progress link.

    3. Find the applicable volume copy operation in the table.

    4. Select Re-Copy to re-Copy the volume copy operation.

  21. Select Recheck to ensure the problem has been resolved.
